    "...…when marrying into the Thornton family who themselves had lived here for three centuries and had commissioned the Hall c.1685. A rigourously crisp rectangular block, the Grade I listed house presents a main face of such crowded completeness it’s almost confrontational: ‘Do nothing more to me, I am finished’. And, by and large, no-one has. Though they appear to irritate some, Handed on rather enjoys the playful tricksy symmetry of those window pediment variations. The rear, however, is unrecognizably different, an earlier house having been incorporated...."
