Eskdale Mill - pit wheel

  • Description

"This shows the gear driving the one set of working stones. The large pit wheel is at the back with the drive to the stones from the bevel pinion at the top. A lever can lift the pinion out of engagement. The vertical drive shaft is carried on the wooden tentering beam across the middle foreground. The bearing for the wheel shaft is seen bottom centre. The bearing for the disused wheel is actually made of stone." Photo by Chris Allen, 2017.
