Hitachi opens new £82 million train manufacturing facility in Newton Aycliffe

  • Description

The Prime Minister David Cameron, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and Rail Minister Claire Perry attend the opening of Hitachi's new £82 million facility in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. The facility will be used to build and deliver the government's £5.7 billion Intercity Express contract, for state-of-the-art trains to be used on the East Coast and Great Western main lines, as well as the Scottish commuter trains. The new trains will revolutionise journeys to Bristol, the Cotswolds and South Wales and to Yorkshire, the North East and Scotland, with more seats on each train, more services, reduced journey times and improved reliability. The facility will create over 700 direct jobs and support thousands more in the supply chain.
