    "First World War memorial constructed of sandstone which takes the form of a St. Cuthbert's cross with an embossed central boss bearing the dates 1914 1918. The tapering cross shaft surmounts a chamfered rectangular plinth, placed on a chamfered base. The main inscription ON FRONT reads TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY/ OF THE MEN FROM MONKTON DISTRICT/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR./ "MAY THEY REST IN PEACE" ...."
