Easington Beck Culvert

  • Description

"The opening of the Grinkle Ironstone Mine in 1865 necessitated Easington Beck to be culverted to allow access and for a narrow gauge railway from Port Mulgrave [[NZ7917]] through tunnels under Ridge Lane (this grid square) and connecting Dale House [[NZ7717]] to the harbour at Port Mulgrave. It looks as though the culvert has recently suffered a partial collapse. The rope has been installed by an inspection team from nearby the Cleveland Potash Mine. During the operation of the mine the culvert also gave way causing the death of an employee. Ore from the mine was shipped to Jarrow and the mine abandoned in 1934. I surmise the iron posts are a debris trap to prevent the culvert getting blocked." Photo by Mick Garratt, 2009.
