Cell block, POW Camp 18

  • Description

"The cell block is one of the few remaining buildings from the former POW camp at Featherstone Park. The gentleman pictured is Josef Kirchdorfer a former Luftwaffe pilot. The lady is his daughter. At the age of 19, Josef escaped from the camp with 6 others on 31.3.45 just before the war ended. The escapees split into 2 groups. Josef and his 2 companions were recaptured the following evening at Alston and detained in the cell block for several days. One of the other group was drowned as they attempted to cross the River South Tyne. The other 3 were also caught in Alston on 2.4.45. After 61 years, he returned to the camp for the first time."
