Charlotte Square, NE1
-
Description
"The square was designed by William Newton (1730-1798). In 1769, he took a lease on the south-eastern corner of the Blackfriars precinct, and built Newcastle's only 18th C square in the London style. There are substantial brick houses on three sides, around a garden reserved for the exclusive use of the residents. The square was named after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III. By 1848, one of the properties was already in use as the Royal Grammar School; today, it is all in social or commercial use, except for one property which is housing association flats. Some of the buildings in the square are Grade II listed http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1355202 , http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1116223 , and http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1024941 .
