"Joseph Cowen (1831-1900) served Newcastle as a member of parliament from 1873 to 1886. He was the owner of the Newcastle Chronicle from 1862, and founded [[4496532]]. The sculptor was John Tweed, a follower of Rodin. The statue is Grade II listed http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1355328 . The Buildings of Grainger Town - No.184.
