Cross House, Westgate Road / Finkle Street, NE1

  • Description

"The first Cross House was a 17th C brick mansion, which became a vicarage and was then modified and extended for commercial purposes, before being demolished when Westgate Road was widened about 1900. This (second) Cross House was built on this difficult triangular site by Cackett and Burns Dick in 1911. The ferro-concrete frame is clad in Portland stone, both smooth and heavily tooled to provide contrasting surfaces. The windows are plain and simple, except for two relieving, full height bay windows on each side. There is a very heavy cornice at the fourth floor, and decorative figures on the narrow gable [[4502479]]. See also [[4506204]]. The Buildings of Grainger Town - No.185. See [[4406042]]."
