Description
This is a group photo of the students and staff of the famous http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateshead_Talmudical_College" >Gateshead Yeshiva probably from the early 1930s. Today this is the most important yeshiva in Europe and one of the most important in the world. This is a very http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haredi" >Haredi institute (yeshiva). But the boys are dressed completely different from how Haredim dress today, although Haredim today claim that they are dressed how Jews in Europe have dressed for centuries! Photos like these are very rare. Many Haredim are anathema to be photographed. Note that the boys wear trilbys or caps but the Rabbis, the two in the middle, arebare-headedwithout hats, just kippot. Also, today it is exceptional for any Haredi male to be clean shaven. The two Rabbis are Nachman Landinski and Eliezer Kahan, not sure which is which. Photographer unknown. I saw this photo in http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gateshead-Miriam-Dansky/dp/0944070884/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1206986457&sr=11-1" >Gateshead by Miriam Dansky . I added it to the wikipedia article. My mother owns the original which I have scanned. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/benqish/2377391512/#large" >see large -
