Raft race at Dunelm House, 1968
-
Description
"The race, part of University rag week, is also shown in http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=39357970 , and the raft shown is passing under Kingsgate Bridge, which was possibly the finishing line. Its eastern support can be seen on the right; I've left the image awry to show more of it. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3308163. Dunelm House, in the background, is the University student union building, completed three years earlier after four years in construction. "Brutalist by tradition but not brutal to the landscape" thought Pevsner http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durham_Students'_Union and http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=ZjHcM_LXhjEC&pg=PA233&lpg=PA233&dq=%22Brutalist+by+tradition+but+not+brutal+to+the+landscape%22&source=bl&ots=kUpU-kk9HX&sig=BkxH8-RY_okvwVomv7xhcGrNt94&hl=en&sa=X&ei=QF0CUdCoC-uY0QWssYHoAQ&ved=0CD4Q6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=%22Brutalist%20by%20tradition%20but%20not%20brutal%20to%20the%20landscape%22&f=false ."
