Low Chibburn

  • Description

"Ruins with a long and eventful history. The Chapel of Knights of St John, nearer the camera, provided shelter for pilgrims on their way to Lindisfarne. After the Dissolution the estate passed to the Crown and later to the Widdrington family. The further part of the building represents the remains of the 16th century Manor House, but the walls of the chapel are of much finer workmanship, and represent the sole remains of the Preceptory of the Knights of St John. A former moat was lost when in 1957 surrounding land was mined for coal, over 8 million tons were produced. In 1973/4 the land was reclaimed as farmland." Photo by Russel Wills, 2015.
