Description
"Colliery disaster memorial. Sandstone. 1906-7, designed by Douglas Crawford and sculptured by Borrowdale Brothers of Sunderland. About 5 metres high in 2 stages. Pedestal on moulded plinth has square corners framing convex panels. Worn, partly-illegible front panel inscribed: THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION TO THE MEMORY OF THE TWENTY SIX MEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE EXPLOSION AT WINGATE GRANGE COLLIERY; OCTOBER 14TH 1906......" -
