    "Unthank Hall is on of the earlier manorial sites in Weardale; a 1393 Inquisition records a that a William de Merley 'died seized of the manor of Unthank' ; it later passed by marriage to the Maddisons who held it until c1640; then to Westgarth family who held it until the 19th century. The building fell into a semi-ruinous condition until restored c2000 by its present owner. Archaeological recording was carried out at this time, including dendrochronology analysis which allowed the West Range to be dated to c1542 and the East Range to c1592. The house is built of ..."
