SUTTONS-DWELLINGS-5

  • Description

Images taken for the tenants group at Suttons Dwellings, Adelaide Terrace, Benwell, Newcastle during a time of change and uncertainty due to proposed ‘redevelopment’ which would mean rehousing people elsewhere and the break up of the existing community. These are some of the images that were taken between 1995 and 1996 by the Tyneside based Community Photography Project. This was a black and white, film based, project. The photographs had the primary purpose of helping the tenants group but also, now, are a part of the social history of Tyneside in the tradition of Humanist Documentary Photography. Photographs from some of the documentary projects carried out by the Community Photography Project in Tyneside since 1992 are now in the Tyne and Wear Museums Archive.
