Description
Three sons of Mr. George Brewis, of Askew Road, Gateshead, are with the colours: Pte. G. Brewis, 16th Lancers (wounded, but back in the trenches); Pte. W. Brewis, 9th D.L.I.; and Dick Brewis in the Navy. Mr. Robt. Brewis, brother of Mr. George Brewis, has a son, one son-in-law, and two cousins in the country's service. Tom Brewis , in the Navy, Pte. J Brewis, 2nd D.L.I., another son died of pneumonia; Pte. Luke Hillery (son-in-law); Pte. T. Carr (cousin), prisoner of war; and Pte. C. Cross (cousin), 9th Durhams. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 18th of January 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
