William Gibbon - Red Cross - South Moor

Mr. William Gibbon, of South Moor, who has been appointed to the staff of the Chief Commissioner (Sir C. Thomson) of the Joint Committee of the Red Cross Society and the St. John Ambulance Association, at Boulogne, is secretary of the South Moor Collieries Company's ambulance classes and rescue. He volunteered for service abroad some time ago with others of the same division, who have since gone. Mr. Gibbon, however, was asked to reserve himself for another branch of the same service and proceeded to Boulogne on Monday with charge of a small party, will also take up clerical duties in the Chief Commissioner's office. Mr. Gibbon holds the 4th year ?abel of the St. John Association, and at present is a member of the clerical staff of the South Moor Collieries Company. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 19th of January 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
