SOUTH SHIELDS DOCTOR'S FAMILY OF SIX OFFICER SONS. Six sons of Dr William Gowans, of South Shields (himself a retired Lieut.-Colonel of the 3rd D.V.A.) are officers in King's forces: Mr. H.N. Gowans, Captain in second Canadian contingent; Major J. Gowans, D.S.C.; Major W. Gowans, 1st Battalion K.O.Y.L.I.; Liuet-Colonel T. Gowans, in command of the R.A.M.C. Base Hospital. Armstrong College, Newcastle; Staff-Surgeon F. Gowans on H.M.S. Queen Mary; and 2nd Lieut. J. Gowans, 17th Service Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 15th of February 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
