Four High Spen families are with the Colours and the include two members of the name of Robert Hedley and two of the name of John Teasdale, all in the 9th D.L.I. The families are: Mr. and Mrs Dixon: 4 sons, 1 son-in-law (Pte. R. Hedley) and 6 nephews; Pte. John and Mrs. Teasdale: 2 sons, 2 brothers (Ptes. R. Teasdale, J. Walton) and one nephew (Pte. James Teasdale); Mrs. Armstrong: 3 sons, 1 cousin (Sergt. W. Codling and 1 brother (Pte. Harry Armstrong); Mr. and Mrs. Hann: 3 sons and a fourth has offered his services. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 31st of March 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
