Robert B Booth - Border Regiment - Ashington
-
Description
HOW ASHINGTON SOLDIER WON THE D.C.M. Quartermaster-Sergeant Robert B. Booth of the Border Regiment has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry in France. His company was holding a trench that was being attacked by a superior force of Germans. Reinforcements were urgently needed, and Sergeant Booth left the trench under heavy rifle fire, and succeeded in carrying a message to the officer in command. He was awarded the D.C.M., and also promoted to Quartermaster-Sergeant. Booth saw active service in the Boer War, and holds both the Queen's Medal and the King's Medal for that campaign. In the present war his battalion has suffered heavily, and in December out of 1,100 men there were only 150 left. His brother, Mr. F. Booth, is manager at Ashington Colliery. Prior to enlistment, the young soldier was engaged in the colliery offices. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 3rd of March 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images please comment below.
