NORTHERN ROLL OF HONOUR Corpl. W.A. Johnson, 2nd N.F., has been killed in action. A native of Bellingham, joined forces in Newcastle, and was transferred to Sheffield where he received his first stripe. He was with his regiment in India for a year, and was raised to the rank of corporal while in that country. Just before the New Year he visited Bellingham when on leave, and was then sent to the front. He fell on Feb, 11, in the battle of Ypres. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 12th of April 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
