    Brief history of the Laing by Curator, Julie Milne. "In 1900, Alexander Laing, a wine and spirit manufacturer, offered to build an art gallery, bearing his name, to commemorate 50 years of successful business in Newcastle. The City Council accepted enthusiastically, and the gallery opened to the public on the 13th October 1904. Laing was a public-spirited businessman, rather than a connoisseur or collector and the Laing is unusual amongst British regional galleries in having been established without a collection.
