    Sir James Knott (1852-1934) began his working life,at the age of 14, as a shipping clerk on Newcastle's quayside. He later qualified as a barrister and then went on to found the Prince Line,which was at the time one of the world's biggest shipping lines with over 40 ships. He became a philanthropist and in 1938 the Sir James Knott Memorial Flats and Nursery School were built in North Shields with funds provided by his charitable Trust.

Co-Curate is a project which brings together online collections, museums, universities, schools and community groups to make and re-make stories and images from North East England and Cumbria. Co-Curate is a trans-disciplinary project that will open up 'official' museum and 'un-officia'l co-created community-based collections and archives through innovative collaborative approaches using social media and open archives/data.
