    Name: John Gumis Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 5 October 1903 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-21-John Gumis The Shields Daily News for 5 October 1903 reports: "THEFT FROM A PUBLIC HOUSE. John D. Gumis, a Portuguese fireman, was charged with stealing a silver knife and plate and a quantity of butter, valued 4s, from the Rising Sun Inn, Albert Edward Dock, on the 3rd inst. William Stephenson, manager of the public house, stated that defendant came to his house on Saturday and had some refreshments. After he went out he missed the goods produced. He proceeded after him and found the goods in his possession. Sub.-Inspector Lowe, RTP [River Tyne Police], gave evidence as to the arrest and stated that when charged defendant replied that somebody must have put them into his pocket. The Bench committed him to prison for one month".
