Lieut Colonel George Elliot Benson, Hexham

    This statue of Lieut Colonel Benson (1861-1901) stands at Hexham. Lieut Colonel Benson was a member of the Royal Regiment of Artillery. He served in various colonial campaigns, including the Sudan. He died of wounds received at the Battle of Bakenlaagte (Boer War). The stature was erected by public subscription, and is marked "To the memory of a gallant soldier."
