It shows a view of Newcastle upon Tyne from Westgate Road. The photograph was taken from a point near the present day junction of Westgate Road and Grainger Street. The square tower of Saint John's Church is on the left in the foreground of the photograph. The lantern tower of Saint Nicholas's is the smaller more elaborate tower in the middle of the picture in the background. Church and St Nicholas Church.
