The pant is the darker pillar-like object in the foreground slightly to left of centre. There is a loaded cart to the right of the pant. There are buildings in the background. The title on the front of this postcard reads: Old Newcastle ancient pant in Bigg Market in 1827. Pant is an old term still in common use in the North East of England. Those in Newcastle upon Tyne usually have or had a trough in front to hold water as well as the spout or fountain within taller part of the pant. The building behind the pant on the right has a number of signs advertising the craftsmen or tradesmen who work in the building. Two of the signs are legible: H. Frost Cooper and Cabinet Maker -
