Nunthorpe Priory
-
Description
Cistercian nunnery founded circa 1167 moved to Baysdale (NZ 60 NW 4) circa 1189. L-shaped earthwork south of hall with ditch probably associated. More information : A Cistercian nunnery dedicated to St. Mary was moved to Nunthorpe circa 1167 from Hutton (where it was originally founded in 1162). It was later moved to Baysdale circa 1189. (1) To the north of Nunthorpe is Nunthorpe Grange (Grange Farm NZ 54121418); here was the old 'Nunhouse' of Basedale. Their mill was probably on the Tame. (2) The siting information in Authority 2 is incorrect; local tradition sites the Nunnery in the grounds South of Nunthorpe Hall. (3) Nunthorpe Grange mentioned in Authority 2 is a modern farm with no visible signs of antiquity. (4) In pasture lands south of Nunthorpe Hall (NZ 54211298) is an 'L' shaped earthwork containing a ditch of average depth 1.2m. This earthwork supports the siting given by Authorities 3 and 4.... -
