Springhill (Berwick upon Tweed)

    excavated a trench in 1946 in the vicinity of the Roman fort discovered on aerial photographs by Dr J K St Joseph (CUC B41) and found an Antonine Sherd'. (1)(10c) This site, previously thought to be a Roman Fort. (2) Now seems most likely to be a native settlement of the 'Roman Iron Age'. (3) ....Evaluation trenches excavated in 2019 found no trace of the camp. In several trenches bedrock was present close to the surface, some of which lay in a stepped or ridged profile. It is suggested there is a possibility that the features interpreted as cropmarks of an Iron Age or Roman camp in the 1950s may derive from geological or later industrial activity. (9)....
