Pittington Hallgarth - Conservation Area Appraisal, December 2009
-
Description
....The original Parish of Pittington contained Sherburn, Shadforth and Ludworth. In the mid C19 the Parish was sub-divided due to the vastly increased population that came with the growth of the mining industry. Originally Pittington was divided into two settlements; the village of North Pittington (now Low Pittington) and Pittington Hallgarth which was a manorial centre of the Prior of Durham. High Pittington developed during the 19th and 20th centuries as a mining village. There is evidence of settlement at Pittington from over 6000 years ago..... -
