Model of the Fort about 207-08, Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum

  • Description

This model shows the conversion of Arbeia into a supply base large enough to support Hadrian's Wall. The fort is being expended; a new southern wall has been built and the old one is in the process of being demolished. The fort is being filled with granaries. Even the most important building, the headquarters situated right in the centre, is being converted into two granaries. I was usual for forts to have two granaries on site. At its height, Arbeia had 24, enough rooms to store food for 11 other forts! A smaller headquarters building was later built on the site of the original South Gate. And new accomodation for the soldiers, currently living in tents in the south-west corner, was also built within the extended area.
