Allendale Town 1905 [01]
-
Description
A view along the ‘High Street’ towards the Board School. On the right can be seen the premises of WJ Brown in Westoe House, with his name above the door. William John Brown (1845-1914) was a boot dealer who came to Allendale from South Shields between 1903 and 1911. To the left of Westoe House, the shop frontage next door has the name ‘Forster’ above the door. This was John Forster’s drapers and grocery store, later to become ‘Dicks’ Shop’. The metal railings of the ‘Bullring’ (dismantled in the 1920s) can be seen on the extreme left. Photograph in private ownership.
