Allendale Square 1905 [02]

  • Description

Two children and a dog drive cattle along the ‘High Street’ in the Square, Allendale. On the right can be seen the premises of WJ Brown in Westoe House, with his name above the door. To that building’s left, the shop frontage next door has the name ‘Forster’ above the door. This was John Forster’s drapers and grocery store, later to become ‘Dicks Shop’. The railings of the ‘Bull Ring’, which was to be removed about 20 years after this photo was taken, are visible on the left. Photograph in private ownership.
