Old Milestone by the A68, Rochester

    "Carved stone post by the A68, in parish of ROCHESTER (TYNEDALE District), South of Birdhopecraig United Reformed Church, in pavement, by dry-stone wall, opposite green corrugated building, on North side of road. Newcastle quadrant stone, erected by the Elsdon & Rudwater turnpike trust in the 19th century. Apparently, after 2016, the stone was moved to become a cap stone on the dry-stone wall, a short distance to the East of its original position. Inscription reads:- : (N)ewcast(le) / 35 / Miles : : Jedbro / 21 / (Miles) : Milestone Society National ID: NB_NCJB35." Photo by C Minto, 2002.
