Lune Head Beck west of Far Beck Bridge

  • Description

"County Durham's River Lune rises close to the farm of Grains o' th' Beck at the confluence of Lune Head Beck (considered by some the upper part of the Lune) and Long Grain. Lune Head Beck itself is formed by the meeting of a group of tributary streams on the east flank of Little Fell in Cumbria. The river flows eastward through Lunedale to Selset Reservoir, after which it turns north-east and feeds Grassholme Reservoir, before continuing to join the River Tees just east of Middleton in Teesdale. The place-name, Grains o' th' Beck probably refers to the branches of the streams that combine to make the Lune." Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2021.
