Former windmill, Acomb

  • Description

"There was also a water mill on the [[1269402]]; Pevsner says that "the millstream was insufficient to turn the internal overshot wheel in dry summers, so the watermill {now also a private house - MQ} was operated first probably in conjunction with the windmill on the hill to the south and then in the 19th C with a steam engine on the gable wall. The windmill, now part of Lanthorn Cottage, retains a round, tapered three-storeyed tower with chamfered windows and a doorway dated 1720, with the initials RR (Richard Ridley)." The building, which was converted to a dwelling in the late 18th/early 19th C, is Grade II listed https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1304085?section=official-list-entry ."
