'Sandcastles' Art Work, Spanish City Plaza, Whitley Bay

  • Description

"This functional work of public art is by the artist Richard Broderick see https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1636560 for further information, and is an important part of the coastal streetscape. It was the inspiration for the following poem which first appeared in the 2019-published book, 'Tyne Anew Celebrating Public Art in North Tyneside': Our Camelot (Sandcastles) 1 Then We built a sandcastle for our children, towers and turrets rising skywards, a moat scooped out by hand, a network of lanes, twisting like vines, sun streaking down on a seaside town. We built a land fit for the finest queen, plundered the shore, pebbles and shells, sea coal as smooth as soap, and we carried our swag back to our castle in a half-filled bucket. We built our own Camelot by the sea. Slowly the tide turned, slithered across the hard wet sand, edged towards us, like a snake towards its prey, and then it was gone, Camelot was no more. 2 Now Sitting here, cupped in your protective shield, cocooned against the wind, sea spray rising like a wall of smoke, we watch the tide roll in. Out on the hazy horizon, wind turbines gather in their rich harvest and a single ship steams towards the Tyne. It is a familiar sight. This is our Camelot.
