Roman milestone at Middleton
-
Description
"Looking north towards the [[614255]] In the distance are the Howgill Fells beside which is [[3648566]]. The milestone seems to have toppled over recently - the pasture is full of cattle who no doubt love to use it as a scratching post. Pictures in this link show it standing http://transportheritage.com/find-heritage-locations.html?sobi2Task=sobi2Details&sobi2Id=827 There are Latin words carved into the stone but these are not original, dating back only to 1836 when the stone was uncovered 'by Richard Bownass of Hawkin Hall, who ploughed it up some 200 m to the west of its current position in a field near Middleton Church'. It is Grade II* listed structure http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-75735-roman-milestone-approximately-74-metres-t/osmap The milestone has recently been re-sited and now stands beside the church shown in the background http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5349726 ."
