The Old Railway Bridge

  • Description

Just off the Old Roman road (Wandales Lane) near High Casterton. Another image from our Barbondale walk, with the Lumix G3 plus Sigma 19mm DN Art. The bridge carried the Ingleton Branch Line from the existing Ingleton Station to Low Gill, near Howgill and was built by The Lancaster and Carlisle Railway. By the time the branch was completed in 1861, via Sedbergh, the L&CR was operated by the London and North Western Railway (L&NWR). After formal closure the line was still on occasions used for weekend excursions and to transport pupils to and from local boarding schools. Goods traffic continued until 1 October 1964. The line was maintained as a possible relief route until April 1967 when the tracks were lifted. The 11 Arch Lowgill Viaduct can still be seen from the M6 Motorway, at the Lune Gorge on the left just after the Tebay exit southbound. It really is a crying shame the disused line hasn't been made a footpath!
