Old milestone

  • Description

"This stone is on a cut off piece of old road on the northeast side of the A66 near Thorpe Grange Farm. The remnants of the inscribed and then painted legends are Catterick/bridge/13 on the left face and Greata/bridge/1 on the right. Greata may be an old spelling or the mason couldn't spell! It may be a milestone from the Middleton Tyas, Greta Bridge and Bowes turnpike first enacted in 1744. It is Grade II listed 1121659." Photo by Hilary Jones, 2022.
