An Archaeological Watching Brief at the Church of our Lady, Seaton Delaval. Archaeological Research Services

  • Description

Lightfoot, R. (2021). An Archaeological Watching Brief at the Church of our Lady, Seaton Delaval. Archaeological Research Services. ABSTRACT: Archaeological Research Services Ltd (ARS Ltd) was commissioned on behalf of Michael Atkinson, Atkinson Architecture and Heritage to undertake archaeological monitoring at the Church of Our Lady, Seaton Delaval. Church of Our Lady is a Grade I Listed Building (NHLE 1041317), built in the 12th century. As a result, any excavation works were subjected to archaeological monitoring to mitigate possible damage to archaeological remains potentially present within the development area. The archaeological watching brief took place between 11th and 12th January 2021, involving continuous monitoring of the excavation of two drainage trenches within the grounds of the Church of Our Lady. In summary, the watching brief revealed evidence of a structural wall (005) predating the current structure dating from the 12th century with later additions of the chancel and sanctuary. The sandstone wall identified aligns east to west, lining up with the outer wall of the current structure's nave. Whilst the relationship of the wall (005) to the nave was not identifiable within the trench, it is known to predate the current porch, built in the 1890's. Additionally, the recovery multiple residual disarticulated human bones is consistent, given the absence of grave cuts and their presence within the backfilled deposit (006), it is thought to demonstrate the level of disturbance in the area resulting in the truncation of burials. No further features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the course of the watching brief.
