Description
St Margaret's church at Low Wray was built in c.1856 as an estate church for Wray Castle, which had recently been built for James Dawson, a surgeon from Liverpool. The church was consecrated in 1861 by the Bishop of Carlisle and assigned parochial boundaries (outside the parish). The architect is thought to have been H.P. Horner of Liverpool.[1] Hardwicke Rawnsley (1851–1920) became the vicar here in 1878; he was one of the founders of the National Trust, established in 1895. The church is no longer an active place of worship. It is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. -
