Lowther Arcade, Carlisle - February 2018 (1)

  • Description

"As far as can currently be ascertained, when the State Management Scheme acquired the "Three Crowns Hotel" (see: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5208387 ), they also became owners of the Lowther Arcade. The arcade was built in 1904 and the Hotel had access to the arcade at top left in this shot. The "Three Crowns" (renamed the "Citadel Restaurant" by the Scheme) together with the Lowther Arcade were sold to Scottish & Newcastle Breweries on 24 May 1973 for £250,000. This view of the arcade is looking west. See also: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5692275 and http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5718013 .
