County Hotel, Court Square, Carlisle

  • Description

"Not to be confused with the former County Hotel next to the railway station (now the Hallmark Hotel). Built in 1894-6 as the Red Lion Hotel, renamed in 1990. Listed Grade II. In the foreground is Court Square which marks the ends of the A6 from London (Botchergate, to the right) and the A7 (The Crescent, to the left) from Edinburgh. This is the only location outside London and Edinburgh where two single-digit A Roads meet end-on." Photo by Alan Murray-Rust, 2018.
