Former National Westminster Bank, 46 Main Street, Cockermouth

  • Description

"Grade II Listed early 19th century bank. Now apparently split into two retail units. Planning archives include an entry for alterations to second floor in 1949 for National Provincial Bank who merged with Westminster Bank in 1970 to form NatWest. Lists of acquisitions don't seem to include a bank in Cockermouth so I assume the National Provincial Bank had this built. In 1976 planning approved conversion to both a retail shop and a doctor's surgery so NatWest must have moved out by then. Businesses that have given 46 as their address include, in no particular order; Munchiez; Oasis; Wendy's Hairdressers; Hartleys Ice Cream Parlour & Coffee Shop; The Hungry Caterpillar; Lakeland Aesthetics; Babycakes; Calisa Spa; Coffee & Cream."
