Norham House, 71 Main Street, Cockermouth

  • Description

"Grade II* Listed 18th century substantial house. Currently occupied by Brockbanks Solicitors it has been dated to 1725. It housed at one time Harford School who became St Helen's School. There is also a 1973 book 'The Pre-Raph Fringe' by Norham House Gallery Cockermouth who were possibly here in 1968. In 1969 the Post Office acquired Norham House with a view to replace it with a telephone exchange. Eventually after a long campaign a Cockermouth Civic Trust member bought the building in 1972. Planning files suggest from at least 1980 it was Norham Restaurant & Coffee House although they are still trading at the rear but probably more properly addressed as no.73 that they seem to have occupied since 1982 or before. It was changed from retail to offices in about 2005. Alterations and refurbishment took place about 2011 possibly when Brockbanks moved in?" Photo by Jo and Steve Turner, 2023.
