    "Metal post with attached metal plate by the A696, in parish of PONTELAND (CASTLE MORPETH District), West Road, to right of Snaith's Butchers shop, between path and wooden fence, on South side of road. Smith Patterson iron shield, erected by the Ponteland turnpike trust in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- NEWCASTLE {<-arrow} 8 BELSAY 5¾ {arrow->} Maker:- SMITH PATTERSON & CO BLAYDON Northumberland HER.
