Entrance to Sandside Lodge School

  • Description

"Formerly the entrance and gate lodge of Todbusk, a large private house built for Barrow iron foundry owner David Caird, this gateway now provides access to Sandside Lodge School. The school is in the background and on the same campus as Ulverston Victoria High School; it provides a dedicated facility for students with special educational needs and disabilities. The school building is on the site of the original house. The gate lodge is empty and showing signs of disrepair and the gateway itself has been widened with sympathetic treatment of the stone work, to ease vehicular access and to provide a footway. There is an Ordnance Survey cut benchmark on the un-rebuilt part of the stone wall to the left of the gateway (photograph [[7088415]])." Photo by Adrian Taylor, 2021.
