Adam Telfer & Old Hemp Memorial, Woodhouse, West Woodburn

  • Description

"See description here: [[5729747]] Adam Telfer and his dog, Old Hemp, lived at the farm of Woodhouse near West Woodburn in the late 19th century and are said to be behind the form of shepherding which allows sheep to be controlled by the eye of the dog alone. The campaign to raise money for a memorial was started by Simon Falla from Chapel House. The memorial was constructed with assistance from Mr Telfer’s great granddaughter, Caroline Chater, and was unveiled on September 8, 2015, attended by a large assembly of Border Collies and their owners. Old Hemp is considered the foundation sire or 'father' of the Border Collie breed. Their teeth are white as birch, slow under black fringe of silent, accurate lips." From Briggflatts by Basil Bunting (1966)." Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2020.
