Former synagogue on Leazes Park Road

  • Description

"This is a view of the lower end of the street, just before the junction with Percy Street. The old stone building on the right has a fascinating history. It was built as a synagogue in 1880, but eventually converted to a shopping arcade in 1984. In 1989, it suffered a devastating fire, which left only the outer walls standing. Instead of being demolished however, it was rebuilt inside as student flats in 1989. The stone frontage is therefore only a façade, but keeps the character of the old Victorian street."
